Bedford Bicycle Advisory Committee

Present: Terry Gleason, Joel Parks, Brian O’Donnell, Ralph Hammond, Bob Sawyer, Charlie Webster and Holly Webster

Apparently signing up for the room was not enough. Although our signed request was on the correct board, no room had been assigned. Ralph said that he would check on this. We found an empty room.

We approved the minutes from the June meeting and the notes from July.

• Police Accident report -
  Bob reported that on 6/3 at 7:37am there had been an accident, on North Road at Sweetwater, involving 1 motor vehicle and 1 bicycle with no injuries. On 6/21 at 9:09am another accident at 58 South Road with 1 bicycle and 1 motor vehicle. In this case one injury was transported. Bob directed Holly to get the July accident report from the Police Station. She found that on 7/06 at 4:29pm an anonymous cell phone caller reported a cyclist had fallen from his bike and was injured. The ambulance transported two patients to Lahey. On 7/26 at 1:34pm, a bicycle was reported down on The Great Road at Hillside Ave. The patient was transported to a hospital at 4.2 miles and the cycle is secured at the Police Station.
• MMB Extension –
  Terry went to the CPC meeting and then spoke to Rich Warrington about the Extension. Terry reported that there were three projects: 1) beautify Bedford entrances, eg. Wiggins Ave, and Fawn Lake 2) VHB study of alternative surfaces project and 3) VHB constructability project. Warrington suggested going along with the alternative paving and let people find out how poor it is but paving can be done down the line. On Sept 15 or Sept 22 there will be a selectmen's meeting where this will be discussed. Richard Warrington will present this and as many of us as are able should attend. Terry will tell a few interested parties from Concord who might be able to attend and interject if there is time. Bruce Williams from the Bruce Freeman Trail is one of these
• Repaving and Lane Widths
  We had some discussion about restriping. 11' lanes are in some places, but we still have some questions for Mark. Can 44 Burlington Road be fixed?
• input to DPW projects
  DPW published projects for the coming year. Could the BBAC see the updated or current copy of this to be sure of safety of bicycles? Holly will ask Rich Warrington if we can get on the distribution list of projects. We can then look over and decide if we actually want to see the plans.
• Liaisons and other committees
  Ralph will try to become appointed to the Transportation Committee to represent bicycle interests. Brian will also try to be a member at large of the Transformation Committee
• "Rules of the Road"
  Review and revise the Bedford 2005 "Rules of the Road", was brought up but we need to ask Mark about this. Bob say it has to be compared with the state law. Can we suggest we would like to review this document and be included on the next revision?
• Existing Rail-trail Maintenance
  Ralph reported that so far the DPW has not done any brush clearing on the Minuteman extension. It definitely was not cleared for the PMC Kids Ride. DPW does not supervise the brush clearing which is contracted out. Terry will email a friend who rides the extension to call the DPW to say he rides it and would like to see it cleared. Note: after the meeting, Joel rode the extension and found it had been trimmed back adequately.

Next Meeting for the BBAC is Wednesday Sept 10, 2008, 7:30pm at the Town Hall.

Bedford Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway

• Joel and Terry will meet this week to finish the application to CPC for bike stands and see if they can still get it in by Aug. 31 and finish this action.
• Rail Trail Users Count –
  Terry reported on the July Trail Count. He reported 60 commuter bikers in the early morning hours. He will send the July Trail summary report to the Selectmen and the Planning Board. He is trying to collect names of the commuters.
• Minuteman Rail-Trail Hall of Fame Celebration
  Joel reported from a July 16 meeting that he attended with Terry on the Hall of Fame Celebration by Rails to Trails. It was suggested that Wiggins Ave. would be a good place to put a banner or plaque. It will take place Oct. 5 from 9am to 4pm. With 3:30pm being the time that Bedford should provide some sort of celebration. Our committee should have a representative at Depot Park for the entire time to answer questions. An ice cream fest was suggested and Ralph volunteered to ask the Rotary Club to take on this idea. Brian will ask Mark Siegenthaler to speak and to introduce Cathy Cordes who will speak s well. He will previously ask permission from the Town and also talk to Jim Shea of Depot Park.
• Burlington Land-locked area
  Burlington Land-locked area discussion will be postponed. We should think about what Lexington and Bedford are doing to maintain open space. Terry and the Trails committee are watching this item.
