Bedford Friends of the Minuteman Bikeway

Subcommittee on Minuteman Bikeway Extension

April 9, 2004 at FBDP Freight House

Attendees: Shea, Evans, Sawyer, Webster and Ruetenik (Schwerin was absent)

Purpose: for members of the BFMB subcommittee to solicit assistance from the FBDP in the committee's endeavor to seek support for the extension of the MM bikeway to Concord Road.

Jim described some of the situations to expect in this endeavor, e.g.:

• Getting the Selectmen on board early [the support of the parking area at the Concord Rd. end by the Board of Selectman is a stimulus for the proposed effort],
• Obtaining letters of support from businesses and others,
• Conservation Commission.
• Letters to abutters

Jim described the funding process that took place for the Depot Park project, the effort needed to keep the process moving and some features of administration characteristic of Mass. Highway, the management of this type project.

The proposed feasibility project is hoped to be funded by the national organization Bikes Belong and an engineering organization such as VHB. Funds for construction of the bikeway would be sought from the Federal Transportation Enhancement Program.

Jim invited members of the subcommittee to the next Board of Directors meeting, to be held at the Freight House on Friday, May 14, at 3 PM, and that the MM Extension will be an item on the agenda.
